Purchasing an artwork is one thing; transporting it safely is quite another.

Transport—along with handling and installation—is one of the stages where an artwork is most at risk. That is why packaging is never selected based solely on the work’s value or dimensions.

It must take numerous factors into account: fragility, structure, materials, the artist’s technique, weight, dimensions, and condition, as well as the mode of transport—road, air, rail, or sea—and insurance requirements.

There are three main levels of protection.

Soft packaging
Suitable for short, simple journeys and non-fragile artworks. It may combine materials such as Tyvek, bubble wrap, Ethafoam, triple-wall cardboard, and corner protectors.

Semi-rigid packaging
This reinforces the initial protection with a sturdier structure, such as a lightweight crate or plywood casing. It is primarily intended for relatively short trips involving minimal handling.

Rigid packaging
For fragile artworks or those requiring superior protection, a crate is essential. It is custom-designed for the specific artwork and incorporates cushioning materials to absorb shocks and vibrations.

Certain crates can also help maintain thermal and hygrometric stability, which is crucial for particularly sensitive artworks.

Options include standard, double-walled, climate-controlled, and fire-resistant crates, as well as those equipped with 3D bracing systems for sculptures.

However, art logistics goes much further than that.

Depending on the artworks and their destination, professionals may use flight cases, travel frames, Climaframes, Climaboxes, or cages specially designed for three-dimensional pieces. And for the most demanding shipments, technology now makes it possible to monitor the journey itself: shock and tilt sensors, as well as data loggers that record the temperature, humidity, and acceleration forces the artwork experiences during transit.

Finally, there is a crucial factor: insurance.

Transport and packaging conditions must comply with the requirements stipulated in the transport insurance policy. For certain fragile artworks, for instance, a rigid crate with internal cushioning may be mandatory.

This is an aspect of the gallerist’s profession that is sometimes unseen, yet essential.

Advising on an artwork also means anticipating its journey, protection, insurance, and installation at its final destination.
